Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To identify, using computed tomography studies, the variability in the depth of the tympanic sinus within the mastoid cavity of the temporal bones according to the classification of Marchioni et al.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted from July 1st to October 31, 2024, including patients of both sexes with computed tomography scans of the ear and mastoid bone. The characteristics of the demographic variables were described, and the association between the TS classification datasets and the demographic variables was measured using a binary logistic regression model, with p < 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) for statistical significance.
RESULTS: There were included 115 patients, aged 18 to 86 years, with a median age of 44 years. In the left tympanic sinus classification of Marchioni was: type A 34 (29.8%), B 53 (46.5%) and C 27 (23.7%); age did not differ by type, but sex did. In the right tympanic sinus classification of Marchioni was: A 57 (49.6%), B 29 (25.2%) and C 29 (25.2%); age p = 0.310; sex p < 0.001.
CONCLUSIONS: The depth of the tympanic sinus varied by laterality and sex; age was not associated, confirming relevant anatomical heterogeneity.
