Abstract
BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of oropharyngeal infections, characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and secondary sepsis.
CLINICAL CASE: A 25-year-old female patient, previously healthy, who initially presented with an oropharyngeal infection that progressed to a deep neck abscess and septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. She was treated with surgical drainage, antibiotic therapy, and anticoagulation, with a favorable clinical outcome and no recurrence during follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: Lemierre syndrome is a rare and serious condition that requires early diagnosis and comprehensive management. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of clinical suspicion in patients presenting with sepsis of oropharyngeal origin and supports the role of surgical therapy in achieving a favorable clinical outcome.
KEYWORDS: Lemierre syndrome; Sepsis; Thrombophlebitis; Abscess; Jugular vein.
