Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of stapedotomy on tinnitus perception in Mexican patients with otosclerosis using the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal, descriptive observational study was conducted in patients with clinically and audiologically confirmed otosclerosis and associated tinnitus who underwent unilateral stapedotomy at a tertiary referral hospital. The TFI was applied before surgery and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and comparisons were performed using the paired Student’s t-test. Ninety-five percent confidence intervals and effect size (Cohen’s d) were calculated.
RESULTS: Twenty patients were included, with a mean age of 54.0 ± 10.1 years; 12 were women. The mean TFI score decreased from 52.7 ± 20.7 preoperatively to 30.9 ± 19.2 at 3 months after surgery. The mean reduction was 21.8 points (95%CI: 12.4-31.2; p < 0.001), with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.08). Clinically significant improvement (≥ 13-point reduction) was achieved in 15 patients, with no association between TFI improvement and age, sex, or degree of hearing loss.
CONCLUSIONS: Stapedotomy was associated with a clinically and statistically significant reduction in tinnitus perception in patients with otosclerosis. The magnitude of improvement exceeded the minimum clinically important difference for the TFI, supporting the functional benefit of this procedure.
