Abstract
Objectives: To determine the relieve of acute perforation of tympanic membrane postreatment with glucosamine/chondroitin/vitamin C in guinea pigs, to know the time of cure of acute perforation of tympanic membrane with or without glucosamine/chondroitin/vitamin C, as well as to determine if there is a relation to the size of perforation of tympanic membrane.
Material and method: An experimental, prospective, longitudinal and comparative study was made including 20 healthy, adults guinea pigs, of both sexes, with weight of 400 to 1,000 g. Otoscopies were done in order to assess the integrity of tympanic membrane of guinea pigs and to discard infectious processes, to document anatomy and size of tympanic membrane. Guinea pigs were distributed into two groups; all subjects were submitted to myringotomy of pars tensa of each tympanic membrane; group B was given treatment with glucosaminechondroitin sulphate-vitamin C (450 mg/10 mg/30 mg), VO, each 12 hours, for a month.
Results: Closing of perforation of tympanic membranes occurred after two weeks in six membranes (two of the control group [A] and four in experimental group [B]); at three weeks in 30 tympanic membranes (14 in group A and 16 in group B) and at four weeks, two of group A. However, there was not statistically significant difference between groups (p=4.8, gl=2, p=0.091).
Conclusions: Treatment of acute perforation of tympanic membrane in guinea pigs does not improves nor reduce the time for closing of perforation.
